Toots Hibbert
Frederick "Toots" Hibbert (actually Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert ; born December 10, 1945 in May Pen , Parish of Clarendon , Jamaica ) is a ska and roots reggae singer and head of the band Toots and the Maytals .
Life
Hibbert grew up as the youngest of seven siblings and received his musical training by singing gospels in a church choir.
As a teenager, he left his hometown and moved to the capital Kingston .
There he met Raleigh Gordon and Jerry Matthias and founded the Maytals with them . The group became one of Jamaica's most popular vocal ensembles in the 1960s, working with famous producers such as Coxsone Dodd , Prince Buster , Byron Lee and Leslie Kong .
Hibbert was one of the first artists to use the word "reggae". His 1968 single Do The Reggay , an early reggae song, is considered the first mention of the word on record.
Hibbert also starred in the seminal Jamaican film The Harder They Come (1972).
Toots continues to tour the world regularly with his band.
Awards
- In 2004 he won a Grammy for best reggae album.
- In 2008 Rolling Stone listed Hibbert at number 71 of the 100 best singers of all time .
- In 2012 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica , the fourth highest order in the country, for his outstanding contribution to the development of Jamaican popular music .
