Frederick Stuart

Hon. Frederick Stuart (born September 24, 1751 - May 17, 1802 in London ) was a British politician.
He came from an old branch of the Stuarts , which descended from the Scottish King Robert II . He was the third son of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute and his wife Mary Wortley-Montagu, 1st Baroness Mount Stuart of Wortley , his siblings included John , James , Charles , William and Louisa Stuart .
He attended Winchester and Christ Church College , Oxford. In 1768 he fled from Oxford to Paris, where he was picked up and sent back. His father got him a job as a clerk with the East India Company and in 1769 he traveled to Bengal . However, he returned to England in 1772, whereupon his father sent him again to India against his will. In India he befriended Governor General Warren Hastings . During his tenure he went into debt with Hastings, who loaned him over £ 4,000 in total . Hastings sent Stuart on a mission to Nawab of Arcot to obtain, but his hopes of a post as ambassador of the company, were not fulfilled. In 1775 he was allowed to return to England. The reports and letters he brought forward prevented Hastings from being recalled in 1776, but he did not succeed in getting a new job with the East India Company. His father had him elected to the House of Commons for Ayr Burghs in 1776 , but was not re-elected in 1780. In 1782 he had to flee to Paris because of his debts, where he initially still lived on donations from his family. His brother John obtained a debt deferral in 1796 and ensured his re-election as MP for Buteshire in the House of Commons. He is not known to have made any contributions to the meetings of the House of Commons during his second term. Six weeks before the end of the term he died in debt, unmarried and suddenly in a hotel in London.
