Frederick Valentine Atkinson
Frederick Valentine Atkinson (born January 25, 1916 in Pinner ( London Middlesex ), † November 13, 2002 in Toronto , Canada ) was a British mathematician .
FV Atkinson began studying mathematics at Queen's College , Oxford in 1934 . In 1939 he received his doctorate from Edward Charles Titchmarsh with a thesis on mean theorems of the Riemann zeta function . He then received a scholarship, which he gave up in 1940 to do military service as a cryptanalyst in the military reconnaissance. He spent three years in India deciphering Japanese codes.
In 1946 he returned to Oxford and two years later accepted an offer from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria to set up a teaching and research department there. Via Canberra ( Australia ), from 1955, he finally came to the University of Toronto in 1960 , where he retired in 1981. For the past 6 years he has headed the mathematics faculty there. FV Atkinson was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1967 and the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1975, and was President of the Canadian Mathematical Society from 1989 to 1991 . In 1992 he suffered a severe stroke that led to loss of speech and partial paralysis.
Atkinson's main areas of work were number theory (Riemannian zeta function) and differential equations ( boundary value problems ). His name is related to Atkinson's theorem about Fredholm operators .
