Fred Dewhirst Yates (born January 16, 1884 in Birstall , † November 11, 1932 in London ), also known as Frederick Dewhurst Yates , was an English chess player .

Life

He won the British championship in 1913, 1914, 1921, 1926, 1928 and 1931 . In international tournaments he was usually not able to place himself at the top, but in individual games he could also be dangerous for better players. At the tournament in Hamburg in 1910, Siegbert Tarrasch objected to his admission because he was too weak. Yates was actually last, but won the game against Tarrasch of all places. He also managed several times in the course of his career to win against Alexander Alekhine and Akiba Rubinstein . He wrote about chess in several English newspapers. With the English national team, Yates took part in the Chess Olympiads in 1927 , 1930 and 1931 and achieved third place as the greatest success in 1927.

It reached its best historical rating of 2596 in January 1925.

He was tragically killed by carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of a defective gas stove.
