Frederik Winter (also: Friedrich Christian Winter ; * May 7, 1712 in Uedem ; † November 11, 1760 in Leiden ) was a German medic.

Life

The son of the Prussian officer Nikolaus Winter began studying at the University of Duisburg in 1731 and continued on September 18, 1732 at the University of Leiden . In Leiden he received his doctorate on June 15, 1736 with the treatise Dissertatio de motu musculorum to the doctor of medicine. In 1737 he was appointed personal physician to the Prince of Orange and in 1740 as the second professor of medicine at the Herborn High School . He took up his office with the speech Oratio de certitudine in medicina . On June 25, 1744, he was appointed to succeed the late Wijer Willem Muys († April 19, 1744) as professor of medicine and chemistry at the University of Franeker .

He took up this office on April 26, 1746 with the speech De certitudine in medicina practica . On April 24, 1747 he was appointed professor of botany there. That same year, on August 8, he was appointed professor of practical medicine at the University of Leiden. He took over this office on October 23, 1747 with the speech Oratio de motu vitali et irritabilitate fibrarum uit . In the same year he became the personal physician of the governor Wilhelm IV (Orange) and after his death on October 22, 1751 was commissioned with his autopsy. He also provided medical services to Wilhelm V of Orange .

In Leiden he set up an outpatient clinic that served to train students. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1750/51 . He made great contributions in the field of physiology and anatomy. So he investigated the question of the structure and irritability of muscle tissue. To do this, he carried out medical experiments on himself and on his students. His studies of irritability led him on the path that Albrecht von Haller had taken, but he did not quite get to its results. Winter was more of a medical practitioner; no other writings have come down from him. After his death, he found his final resting place in St. Peter's Church in Leiden .
