The Frederikskirche (Danish Frederiks Kirken ), often also called Marble Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Danish people's church is located in the immediate vicinity of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen . With its monumental dome it shapes the silhouette of the city.

history

Frederik's Church was designed by Nicolai Eigtved at the same time as the other buildings in the representative Frederiksstad district . King Frederik V laid the foundation stone in a grand ceremony in 1749, on the 300th anniversary of the founding of his dynasty by Christian I. However, the construction in Norwegian marble demanded by the king overwhelmed the state budget by far. After Eigtved's death, the French Nicolas-Henri Jardin presented a revised concept, the further implementation of which, however, was not further supported by Frederick V's successor Christian VII . Johann Friedrich Struensee finally stopped the construction in 1770, and thus began the long existence of the Frederikskirche as a ruined building.

It was only when the influential NCCR Grundtvig campaigned for the maintenance and further construction that an investor was found. In 1874 the Danish state sold the ruins to the industrialist Carl Frederik Tietgen with the condition that the church be completed according to the old plans and handed over to the state. In return, he received the rights to neighboring properties. Tietgen had the church built from Danish sandstone by the architect Ferdinand Meldahl . On August 19, 1894, the consecration could finally take place.

Architecture and equipment

The Frederikskirche is a central building in the classicist late baroque style . The only slightly retracted drum of the dome rises above the round basement with portico , which is modeled on those of the Pantheon and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome . It has a diameter of 31 m, rests on 12 columns and is the largest on a church building in Scandinavia. With a few exceptions, the dome is accessible on Saturdays and Sundays.

Around the church and on the outside gallery of the basement there are larger-than-life, expressive baroque statues of prophets, church fathers and reformers.

The interior is richly decorated with sculptures, mosaics and wall paintings from the time the building was completed. The twelve apostles are depicted in the twelve segments of the dome. Under the dome, a tape in golden capitals runs around the room on a blue background; it shows the biblical word Joh 17.3  EU in Danish.
