The Freedom Tower in Miami is a tower built in 1925 and is intended to commemorate Cuban immigration to the USA . The tower, built on 600 Biscayne Boulevard, was added to the list of historic places in the United States on September 10, 1979 and is also considered a historic landmark for the country.

history

Completed in 1925, the tower was the headquarters of the Miami News & Metropolis newspaper and clearly shows an example of the Mediterranean architectural style that was widely present in the Miami area at that time. At that time it was the tallest structure in Miami and 78 meters high due to the later attached crown.

After the newspaper publisher left the building, the state converted it into a refugee camp. At the time, this was a sign for the opponents of the communists under Fidel Castro to leave the country and flee to the USA. After the Cuban regime was dissolved, many Cubans decided to emigrate again to Cuba and the vacant building was sold to other owners.

In 1997 the building was sold to the Cuban-American head of the Cuban Community in America, Jorge Mas Cnosa , for $ 4.1 million .

The building was restored and is now a monument of international cooperation. It houses a museum , a community hall, a library and lots of office space. The Freedom Tower is currently also used as an art gallery.

The name Freedom Tower

The Freedom Tower in Miami got its name from Cuban refugees and has therefore been named for longer than the Freedom Tower in New York City . The same name often led to confusion and therefore the Freedom Tower in Miami cannot be compared with the one in New York. However, the New York Freedom Tower was officially renamed One World Trade Center in the spring of 2009 .
