FreedroidRPG is a free computer role-playing game released under the GNU General Public License . The hero of the game is Tux , the Linux - mascot . FreedroidRPG based on Freedroid Classic , which in turn Paradroid modeled is a game for the Commodore 64 . The game mechanics are based on the computer role-playing game Diablo .
Game content
The game content is mainly focused on destroying robots . In order to advance in the game, the player has to fulfill tasks of non-player characters , obtain certain items, or fight selected levels from robots, the main opponents in the game. Various weapons such as swords and daggers as well as pistols and rifles are available to the player, which he finds or acquires in the course of the game. The game takes place at a time when an operating system from the imaginary company "MegaSys" is causing rebellion to robots that should work for humans. The robots now attack everything living instead of serving people. But a small village, in which the surviving people have gathered, is resisting the robots. This village represents the center of the game. There the player receives orders, can purchase new equipment or have his current one repaired. There is also a possibility of healing there. The character can also learn various programs ( spells ) there, which for example damage opponents, immobilize them for a certain time or slow them down. There is also an opportunity to heal yourself, given the appropriate program. Healing, however, makes the player immobile even for a short time. If you do not want to use armed force against the robots, you can take them over in a small mini-game , as in the Paradroid model , and, assuming a successful takeover, let them fight for you. The robot classes are numbered and consist of three numbers each. The weakest robot is called 123, one of the strongest is number 999.
The game is also characterized by recurring, often ironic allusions to programming, software and computer history and z. T. science fiction classics.
technology
There is a map editor integrated in the game , which allows the player to create his own levels or maps or to modify existing ones. Using Linux, the game can be started in SDL or OpenGL mode. The former is recommended for computers that do not have 3D acceleration . In order to be able to use the OpenGL mode, the game must first be compiled , unless it is offered as a program package for the distribution . It is also possible to start the game without sound output. A window mode and a full-screen mode are available to the player, with a choice between an image resolution of 640 × 480 and 1400 × 1050 pixels. There are several options that allow the player to adapt the game to the performance of his computer.
Development history
From version 0.12 RC 1, which appeared on February 18, 2009, the game uses C and Python as well as the Lua scripting language , which significantly simplified the handling of the dialog system. Up to version 0.13 the game supported internationalization , but this was removed because there were no developers who had the technical knowledge to use it. In the meantime (end of April 2010) the internationalization of the game was resumed.
The open source platform Transifex is used for this.
The game participated in the 2010 Google Summer of Code . In the meantime, the software review board was introduced to manage the patches . During the Google Summer of Code, the generation of random dungeons was significantly improved, the map editor was revised and the system that regulates special properties of objects was also overhauled and expanded. In addition, Buildbot , a tool for continuous integration , has been in use since September 2010 . In 2009 a talk about the game was given during the FOSDEM .
In mid-November 2010, the game's website was overhauled. The old design was strongly based on the design of the C64 , the new website is more based on the currently developed FreedroidRPG.
The game took part in the Google Summer of Code again in 2011.
