The 1997 European Free Game Championship was the 27th tournament in this discipline of carom billiards and took place from June 26th to 29th, 1997 in Chemnitz . It was the seventh free game European championship in Germany.

history

With a class performance in the knockout phase, the Viennese Arnim Kahofer was able to win his first title on an international level. He defeated the defending champion Martin Horn one after the other in the semifinals and the multiple European champion Fonsy Grethen in the final in just one shot. For the first time, third place was not played out. There were two bronze medals. In the qualification this time no other German participant could qualify for the main round.

Tournament mode

Two qualifying rounds were played, in which the top seven players could qualify for the main tournament. The game distance was 250 points in the pre-qualification and 300 points in the main qualification. In the main tournament, the defending champion was added. Two groups of four players each were formed here. The best two players from each group qualified for the semi-finals. The game distance was 400 points.

In the event of an MP tie in the final table, the following order was taken:

  1. MP = match points
  2. GD = general average
  3. HS = maximum series
