history

Historic venues on the Wieden

A “theater on the Wieden” has been handed down as early as the 18th century, when a group of comedians played theater in a “shack” in the “Freihaus” in 1776 . In March 1787, Christian Roßbach was allowed to build a bricked, tiled "Schaubühne im Freihaus", the so-called Freihausheater . This Schaubühne on the Wieden was - after the one in Leopoldstadt - the second oldest suburban stage in Vienna. Roßbach's successors were Johann Friedel , after his death in 1789 first Eleonore Schikaneder and finally her husband Emanuel Schikaneder . When Schikaneder was playing in the new Theater an der Wien from June 12, 1801 , the theater in the Freihaus was converted into rental apartments and later demolished.

In the Middle Ages, the house in Wiedner Hauptstrasse 60 b, which today houses the “Freie Bühne Wieden”, was a monastery that was closed by Emperor Joseph II . The choir of the monastery church is still preserved in the garden . In the 1920s, the building was home to the socialist youth workers , where the young Bruno Kreisky performed in an ancient Greek choir. In the same room of this medieval monastery building with the baroque garden facade, Topsy Küppers opened the "Free Stage Wieden" in 1976, which she directed until the end of 2000. She handed over the management to the author and director Gerald Szyszkowitz , who led the theater as a premiere stage. The actress Michaela Ehrenstein has been running the theater since January 1st, 2010. She played and staged at this theater under the direction of Szyszkowitz and kept his style of theater, but occasionally also included rarely performed pieces in the program.
