Frenchman River or Frenchman Creek is a river in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan and the US state of Montana . It is a left tributary of the Milk River , which in turn is a tributary of the Missouri .

The river length is about 341 km.

The origin of the name is unclear, although Métis and Francophone settlers inhabited its banks at the beginning of the 20th century. The Frenchman Formation , a stratigraphic unit of the Western Canadian Sedimentation Basin , was named after the river.

River course

The river has its origin in Cypress Lake , located in the Cypress Hills , at an altitude of 975 m. It first flows east to East End . Then he turns to the southeast. Several reservoirs (Eastend Reservoir, Huff Lake, Newton Lake) were built along the course of the river. The river is used to irrigate the surrounding area. As it flows through the Grasslands National Park , the Frenchman River begins to meander. He later crossed the state line to Montana , where it flows into the Milk River north of Saco in Phillips County .
