The Freseken were an old Westphalian noble family with origins in Neheim (now the city of Arnsberg ).

history

The knightly family also called themselves von Nihem (Neheim) and belonged to the vassals of the Counts of Arnsberg . After the transfer of the county to the Archbishop of Cologne, Friedrich III. From Saar in 1377 a Burgmannenhaus (later the Fresekenhof ) was given to the Burgmann Wilhelm Freyseken as a fief. In addition to the properties belonging to the Fresekenhof, the family owned other estates in the Neheim area. In addition, there was property at Rüthen . From around 1344 they owned Gut Nierhof near Voßwinkel . Around 1383 they also owned Höllinghofen Castle , which fell to the Fürstenberg family around 1400 . The family donated some properties to the Oelinghausen monastery . Members of the family were also buried there.

A Johann von Freseken was provost of the Augustinian convent in Glindfeld in 1361/78 . Wilhelm Freseken was provost in the Meschede monastery , cathedral provost in Münster and provost of St. Aposteln in Cologne and received the Wildshausen estate as a fief. A Johann Freseken played a role during the Soest feud . Hermann Freseken was Drost in Werl around 1398 . A Wilhelm Freseken ton Eversberghe (son of Diedrich) was burgrave of Arnsberg Castle in 1437 and one of the signatories of the first Hereditary Land Association in the area of the Duchy of Westphalia . Helena Freseken was the last abbess of the Kaufungen monastery . The family probably died out as early as the 16th or early 17th century, after having lost its importance earlier.
