Wilhelm Freseken (also Wilhelmus de Susato ) († July 19, 1401 ) was provost of the Meschede monastery , canon in Soest , cathedral provost in Münster and canon in St. Aposteln in Cologne .

Life

He came from the noble family Freseken and was probably the son of Gervas (Gervasius) Freseken. In 1366 Pope Urban V reserved a prebend for him in Werden . Before 1371, Gregory XI. The provost office of the Meschede monastery promised him, on the condition that Wilhelm waived all previous benefices. Between 1373 and 1377 Wilhelm was named as Mescheder provost. Probably in 1377 the Wildshausen estate and house was transferred to him as a Cologne fief. In the same year, in his presence, the former Countess Anna von Arnsberg, who had her widow's seat at Wildshausen Castle, issued a certificate in which the Countess considered herself the legal heir of the County of Cleve , but these rights were passed on to the Archbishop of Cologne submitted. He is also mentioned in 1381 as a canon in Soest. As cathedral provost in Münster, Freseken was first mentioned in 1381 in a document on the occasion of the dispute between Friedrich III. von Saar Werden and Count Engelbert III. mentioned by the mark . In the same year he was a witness when the archbishop confirmed its previous rights to the Oelinghausen monastery. He was also present as a witness when a squire returned illegally appropriated goods to the monastery. In 1390 he donated his court to the Oelinghausen monastery "for the salvation of his soul and in order to partake of the pious prayers of the nuns in Oelinghausen" in Epsingen. Apart from an interest of six shillings to the monastery at Meschede , the income was to be divided equally between the provost and the nuns for a consolation on the days of the memorized below. The extensive rites for him and his parents buried in the monastery are detailed below. For the first time an organ, probably in the form of a swallow's nest organ in Oelinghausen, was mentioned in this document . However, the source says nothing about the fact that it was donated by Freseken, as was sometimes claimed. Freseken was also present as a witness when the archbishop forbade the citizens of the cities under his control to take in fugitive farmers from Oelinghauser properties. He was commissioned by the Bishop of Münster Otto IV von Hoya and the cathedral chapter to defend the rights of the cathedral chapter. Since he was not up to the task, Freseken gave up the office of provost of the cathedral. As compensation he received donations of 200 gold guilders per year and an outstanding position in the cathedral chapter after the cathedral dean . Apparently he also held a canon of St. Georgi in Cologne. From 1397 he was provost to St. Aposteln in Cologne. In 1400 he donated a salt house in Westernkotten to the Patroklistift in Soest . He probably died on July 19, 1401.
