Frieda Menshausen-Labriola

Frieda Menshausen-Labriola (born December 9, 1861 in Stendal , † November 23, 1939 in Assisi ) was a German painter .

Life

Birthplace in Stendal

Her training took place in Kassel , Munich , Weimar , Paris and Berlin . Until her wedding with the Italian diplomat Labriola, she lived in Kassel and Berlin, then from 1902 to 1907 in Rome and then again in Berlin. She eventually moved to Bern with her husband . There she took part in the exhibition "Artists of New Italy" in 1930.

In addition to the miniature , the genre and the still life , she particularly preferred the portrait . She developed into the leading German portrait painter of her time and painted portraits of members of the educated bourgeoisie, the nobility and industry, mostly women and international diplomacy. Her paintings of the actress Eleonora Duse and Börries von Münchhausen's sister , Anne-Mete, became famous.

A large number of her works of art were destroyed during World War II.
