From 1977 to 1981 Keßler was also a member of the presidium and board of the CDU regional association in North Rhine-Westphalia.

With his resignation as CDU district chairman, Keßler was elected honorary chairman of the CDU Siegen-Wittgenstein in 1981 because of his services to the party; after his early death in 1985, the house of the CDU district association in Siegen was named Friedemann-Keßler House in recognition of his services .

Keßler was first elected to the city parliament in Siegen in the local elections in 1961. He was a member of the Siegen city council until his death in 1985. After the municipal reorganization, Keßler was elected on May 21, 1975 for the municipal electoral period until October 17, 1979 with a counting community of CDU and FDP in the city council as the last (honorary) mayor of the city of Siegen, which is larger around the incorporated cities of Eiserfeld and Hüttental.

Although the official title of Lord Mayor with the communal territorial reform in North Rhine-Westphalia could no longer be given to large cities belonging to the district such as the city of Siegen and was only available to the large district-free cities of the state, Keßler, as the last chairman of the council of Siegen, was still able to use this title because to At the time of his election the city of Siegen still had a senior city director, Kurt Seibt, as head of administration, whose term of office only ended after the election of the council chair on June 30, 1975.

Awards

In November 1979 Keßler received the seal of honor from the city of Siegen for his commitment to local politics; In 1980 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
