history

In 1899 a branch congregation was founded in Dachau for the few Protestant Christians in the area as a subsidiary congregation of the Christ Church in Munich-Neuhausen . In 1927 an assistant chaplain was established. In 1941 the evangelical community of Dachau became independent; the first pastor was Mr. Endres. In 1947 Pastor Albrecht Köbelin and his wife came to Dachau and shaped the community of the Friedenskirche Dachau for 29 years. In 1952/53 the Friedenskirche was built in Herzog-Albrecht-Strasse with a parish office (Uhdestrasse 2), and the parish hall was opened about seven years later. In 1964 the Gnadenkirche was built in Dachau-Ost due to the large increase in Protestant Christians due to the Second World War . In 1984 the evangelical community center was opened in Schwabhausen and in 1995 the community base "Friedensinsel" in Odelzhausen .

architecture

In 1953 the church was built according to plans by the architect Gustav Gsaenger ; the construction costs amounted to 300,000 DM. The Friedenskirche is still one of the most beautiful church buildings in Dachau from the post-war period . With reference to World War II, the name was intended to awaken the hope of divine peace for refugees from the east, which became a reality in Jesus Christ . The roof, which extends far forward, is intended to protect those coming like a nest for a bird. The round shape at that time was typical of churches . Because the ground is very boggy, the church is placed on a concrete post grid; the roof is covered with wooden shingles.

The tower is 31 meters high; of this, the top of the roof alone measures 20 meters with incorporated sound openings. The sacristy is on the ground floor .

There are three bells in the tower that were cast in 1951:

No. Chime inscription
1 G' O land, land, land, hear the word of the Lord
2 b ′ Hold on to prayer
3 c ″ I will always praise the Lord

Interior decoration

The interior of the church is dominated by a large crucifixion group on the altar wall.

  • Jesus on the cross : The oversized figure compared to the two standing under the cross. He extends his arms over figures under the cross, which is supposed to mean that he includes the whole congregation.
  • Mary : She cannot see her son's suffering, but she points with one hand to Jesus to say "He is our peace"
  • John : Jesus' “favorite disciple” vacillates with his gaze between amazement and defiance, between faith and doubt.

The seven-armed candlestick stands for the Old Testament and is intended to show that Christianity emerged from Jewish roots.

The pulpit , along with the font and altar, is an important part of a Protestant church; the sound cover is suspended from the ceiling.

The organ with 20 registers was built in 1998 by the organ builders Frenger & Eder . At 300,000 DM it cost as much as 45 years earlier the whole church. Its predecessor from 1953 with two manuals and 21 stops was built by the organ builder Rieger from Schwarzach (Vorarlberg) in Austria .
