Friedensplatz (Dessau)

Friedensplatz 1955

The Friedensplatz is an inner-city public green space in Dessau-Roßlau . It forms the environment of the Anhaltisches Theater , which is located to the west , with Fritz-Hesse-Strasse in between.

During the time of the German Empire, the square was called Kaiserplatz , then it was renamed Fritz-Hesse-Platz and has had its current name since 1992.

Earlier sculptures and monuments

On April 25, 1892, a monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I was inaugurated on what was then Kaiserplatz . The monument was donated by Baron Moritz von Cohn , the emperor's former court banker. The statue of the emperor was designed by the Berlin sculptor Tondeur. The layout of the complex is built as a counterpart to the warrior memorial on the other side of the street. When construction work on the new Dessau theater began in 1937, the monument had to give way. Since Cohn was a Jew, it wasn't put back up either.

After the Bismarck Stone was erected in front of the main train station , a second, very similar stone was transformed into a Moltke stone by the Dessau Warrior Association in 1893 and found its place nearby under a group of trees on Kaiserplatz. Nothing is known about his whereabouts after the Second World War.

Today's figures on Friedensplatz
