The cemeteries on Bergmannstrasse are four adjacent cemeteries in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg , between Südstern and Marheinekeplatz . This includes

Together they cover an area of 20.7  hectares , almost half of which is in the old Luisenstadt cemetery.

particularities

The cemeteries are separated from each other by walls on which hereditary burial sites are placed. The cemetery walls were provided with breakthroughs after 1945, for example between the Trinity and Friedrichswerderschem Kirchhof. Here, the pillar architecture of the former mausoleum of the Urban family serves as an elegant passage.

The change in burial habits is clearly visible, many grave sites are not occupied. If the places were previously reserved for the members of the respective parishes, everyone can currently be buried there, taking into account the requirements of the monument protection . Belonging to the Protestant denomination is no longer a requirement.

War graves

There are various closed enclosures for victims of war and tyranny spread across the four cemeteries. There are graves of victims of the First and Second World Wars in the cemetery . There are four collective graves that together contain a little over 50 victims. In total there are 799 victims of war and tyranny in all cemeteries.

Breakdown of the war cemeteries :

  • I. (Old) Luisenstadt Cemetery: 286 in individual graves, 32 in three collective graves
  • IV. Cemetery of the Jerusalem and New Churches: 123 in individual graves
  • II. Friedrichswerderscher Kirchhof: 174 in individual graves, 25 in a collective grave
  • II. Dreifaltigkeitskirchhof: 158 in individual graves

nature

The cemetery complex is characterized by a rich variety of flora and fauna due to its age, its location on the edge of large park and open land areas ( Volkspark Hasenheide , Tempelhofer Feld , other cemeteries), as well as its partially extensive care concept . The cemeteries are considered to be the most species-rich green space in Kreuzberg. The high density of breeding birds is particularly striking .

Possible partial development

The protests of a citizens' initiative are directed against the plans of the evangelical cemetery association Berlin Stadtmitte to create an area of around 3000 m² of the cemetery grounds (the area of the cemetery yard) in the south on Jüterboger Straße .
