Friedhelm L. Müller

Friedhelm Ludwig Müller (born November 17, 1939 in Elben near Kassel ; † December 9, 2014 in Marburg ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Friedhelm Ludwig Müller was the third of seven children of the pastor Ludwig Müller (1907–1974) and his wife Hildegard geb. Bierschenck (1911-2000). He grew up in Elben and from 1947 in Höringhausen near Kassel. From 1950 to 1959 he attended the old language branch of the old state school in Korbach . After graduating from high school (March 3, 1959), he served in the German Armed Forces from April 1, 1959 to September 30, 1960 , where he resigned as a reserve lieutenant. From the winter semester 1960/61 he studied Classical Philology at the Philipps University in Marburg . He also took lessons at the Schlüchtern school of church music and took the C-exam on January 15, 1963. On April 26, 1964, he passed the general teaching examination, and on February 19, 1966, the state examination in Latin and Greek.

At the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Marburg, Müller worked from April 16, 1966 as a research assistant, from September 16, 1967 as administrator of an assistant position and from October 8, 1968 as an assistant. At the same time he wrote his dissertation with Friedrich Müller , with which he became a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . After completing his doctorate, he taught as a student adviser (later senior lecturer) in the university service. In 1997 he completed his habilitation in Classical Philology at the University of Marburg, where he held lectures and exercises as a private lecturer until he retired in 2005.

Müller's research focus was on ancient rhetoric and historiography. He wrote bilingual text editions and monographic studies on the documents in Thucydides , on the Rhetorica ad Herennium , on the satires of Emperor Julian and on the Cicero-Vita of Plutarch . He paid particular attention to late antiquity : he published bilingual, annotated editions of Eutrops Breviarium ab urbe condita , Herodian's Imperial History and Vegetius' work on military affairs.
