history

Mariabrunn cemetery

It has not been established whether there was a cemetery around the Weidlingau parish church. During road construction work west of the Mariabrunn church, however, a cemetery was discovered in 1860, which, however, had served as a plague cemetery. On March 24, 1784, a cemetery was inaugurated southeast of the Mariabrunn monastery, which was surrounded by a fence and had a wooden cross. In 1793 a death chamber was built. After the monastery was sold to the Imperial and Royal Agriculture Ministry in 1869, the property rights of the parish in the Mariabrunn cemetery expired, which led to disputes between the parish and the Imperial and Royal Forestry Academy . The kk agriculture ministry finally managed to close the cemetery for sanitary reasons. The cemetery was no longer occupied from 1875.

In the negotiations for the closure of the old Mariabrunn cemetery, the Hadersdorf-Weidlingau community committed itself to building a cemetery in 1873 at its own expense. The kk agriculture ministry promised a financial contribution for the new construction. The Hadersdorf-Weidlingau community bought a plot of land of around 800 square fathoms at the foot of the Bierhäuselberg for the cemetery of the Hütteldorf parish and was granted a cemetery permit in 1873. The solemn consecration of the cemetery followed on June 28, 1875. The already existing grave digger apartment was extended in 1881 and a morgue was added. Since the cemetery already turned out to be too small after eight years, the cemetery area was doubled by a plot of land belonging to the Hütteldorf parish and the extension was consecrated in 1886. After the cemetery had once again proven to be too small, the repopulation of the old part of the cemetery was approved in 1896, subject to drainage and the construction of a “ mortuary and securing chamber ”. In 1901 the cemetery was enlarged again.

A fund was set up in 1907 to build a cemetery chapel. The chapel was built between 1908 and 1909 according to plans by Max Hegele and consecrated on October 31, 1909. Hegele also designed the tomb of the Eduard Herzmansky family erected in 1909/10, the tomb of the Jean Herzmansky family was executed in 1912 according to plans by the sculptor Theodor FM Khuen .

The bones transferred from the old Mariabrunn cemetery were buried on October 7, 1921 under a wrought-iron baroque cross in the western part of the new cemetery. The old cemetery was then converted into a garden. In 1945/47 the gravedigger's house was renovated, and in 1985 the morgue was replaced by a new building. In 1965 the Vienna State Parliament decided to close the cemetery in 1975. The cemetery was to be closed in 1985, along with other cemeteries. The embargo was extended by 10 years in 1975, and in 1980 the population of Vienna decided against the closure of the cemeteries in a referendum . The dissolution provision was therefore canceled by the Vienna City Council. As a result, in 1984 the office building was replaced by a new building and the renovation of the chapel began. The renovated chapel was reopened on October 29, 1985.
