Marianne Brandt (singer)
Marianne Brandt (born September 12, 1842 in Vienna as Marie Bischof ; † July 9, 1921 there ) was an Austrian opera singer ( alto ) and singing teacher . She worked mainly at the Berlin Court Opera and made guest appearances at numerous houses in Europe and America. She was especially valued as a Wagner interpreter and because of her considerable vocal range, which also allowed her to play soprano roles.
Life
Trained in her hometown of Vienna, in 1868, after a sensational guest appearance at the Berlin Court Opera, she was permanently engaged as Fides in "Prophet" by Meyerbeer and as Azucena in " Troubadour ". She was the first contralto at the Berlin house until 1886.
From 1869 to 1870 she studied again in Baden-Baden with Pauline Viardot-Garcia . Her guest performances took her to London and Vienna between 1872 and 1883 . Since 1884 she also achieved great success at the New York Metropolitan Opera , where she appeared a total of 160 times and in 18 different roles. Over the next four years, she performed further guest appearances on the stages of Rotterdam, Munich, Mannheim, Kassel, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Basel, Graz, Brno and Riga.
In 1890 she returned to her hometown Vienna, where she still worked as a singing teacher and performed in the concert hall. In 1921 she died at an advanced age and was buried in an honorary grave at the Hadersdorf-Weidlingau cemetery (section 1, group N, number 9).
In 1905 her voice was recorded in Vienna on three Pathé cylinders.
