Riza Eibenschütz , married Riza Malata , (born February 17, 1870 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † January 16, 1947 in Perchtoldsdorf ), was an Austrian opera singer with soprano and alto voices .

Life

Riza Eibenschütz was born as the daughter of a businessman. Riza received her vocal training at the Vienna Conservatory with Josef Gänsbacher and Marianne Brandt . Her large vocal range allowed her to sing both soprano and alto parts during her subsequent career as an opera singer.

Eibenschütz received her first engagement at the Leipzig Opera House , where she made her debut in 1894 as Selica ( The African Woman ). She then sang at the Strasbourg Municipal Theater for two years . In 1897 she went on a two-year North American tour with the Damrosch Opera Company . Among other things, she sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She then returned to the Leipzig Opera, to whose ensemble she belonged from 1899 to 1902. On February 15, 1902, she appeared there at the premiere of the opera Orestes by Felix Weingartner . In 1901 she made a guest appearance in Munich.

In 1902 Eibenschütz became a member of the Dresden Court Opera . There she sang at the world premieres of That was me! by Leo Blech (October 6, 1902), Odysseus Tod von August Bungert (October 30, 1903) and in the Richard Strauss operas Salome (December 9, 1905), Elektra (January 25, 1909) and Der Rosenkavalier (as Marianne Leitmetzerin , January 26, 1911). She had various guest appearances, including at the Berlin Court Opera (1892 and 1908).

Eibenschütz's most successful roles included Brünnhilde ( Der Ring des Nibelungen ), Senta ( Der Fliegende Holländer ), Rezia ( Oberon ), Rachel in Halévys ( La juive ) and Leonore in Fidelio . Several sound recordings exist of her, among others published by HMV (Dresden 1908) and Odeon .

After she left the stage, Eibenschütz worked as a singing teacher in Vienna. The chamber singer Hanny Steffek (1927-2010) was one of her students .

Riza Eibenschütz was married to the conductor Oskar Malata (1875–1959), with whom she lived in Perchtoldsdorf from 1932 and where she also died.

Her siblings were the conductor Siegmund Eibenschütz , the pianist Ilona Eibenschütz and the actress Gina Eibenschütz , her niece the singing teacher Maria Theodora Eibenschütz .
