Siegmund Eibenschütz (born November 19, 1856 in Budapest , Austrian Empire , †  February 19, 1922 in Vienna ) was an Austrian theater director and conductor .

Life

Eibenschütz studied at the Budapest Music Academy with Franz Liszt , Robert Volkmann and Franz Erkel . Together with his sister Ilona , who was an important piano virtuoso, he went on concert tours all over Europe. Eventually he settled in Vienna and became an opera répétiteur in the school of Louise Dustmann with Pauline Lucca .

Since 1887 he has conducted at all major theaters in Austria and in 1895 he joined the Theater an der Wien for ten years . His wife was the famous soubrette Dora Keplinger . In 1907 he became a partner of Andreas Amann , the director of the Carltheater, which he eventually directed from 1908 until his death. Under his direction, only operettas were played at the Carltheater , and of 19 works there were only six that were performed en suite less than 100 times . Among the more well-known works were Franz Lehár'sZigeunerliebe ” and Oskar Nedbal'sPolenblut ”.

He was buried in the Evangelical Cemetery Vienna-Simmering ( Vienna Central Cemetery , Gate 3, Group VIII, Av. 29).

His sisters were the pianist Ilona Eibenschütz , the opera singer Riza Eibenschütz and the actress Gina Eibenschütz , his daughter the singing teacher Maria Theodora Eibenschütz .
