Cemetery portal (Eichfeld)

The portal in front of the cemetery

The cemetery portal in Eichfeld on Seubeltstraße at the end of the village forms the cemetery entrance in the Volkach district.

history

In 1588 a new cemetery was created on the outskirts. As a result of several looting in 1553, the number of Eichfeld's dead rose drastically and the old churchyard next to the church was no longer sufficient. Another reason for the relocation came about when the residents of Eichfeld took over the Protestant creed in 1556. Many Protestants from the surrounding villages were now also buried there.

The portal was created in 1588 when the cemetery was rebuilt. It was built by Count Georg II zu Castell , who wanted to use it to remember his late wife Sophia Schenkin von Limpurg-Speckfeld . The cemetery portal still forms the entrance to the Gottesackers today. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the portal under the monument number D-6-75-174-191.

description

The arched portal cites the forms of the Renaissance . The keystone probably shows the head of the stonemason, the year 1588 and two stonemason's marks, one of which is that of Georg Holzwart from Gerolzhofen , the other cannot be clearly assigned. The gussets show the coat of arms of the Limpurg taverns on the right and that of the Counts of Castell on the left. A battlement frieze leads to the gable.

The gable is triangular and has two inscriptions. It is crowned by a cross on a globe, the symbol of the Christian world. Pilasters delimit the lower inscription. They are decorated with the Luther rose . The upper inscription is framed by a fractured frame. There is a crucifix in the middle.

The frame bears the inscription "IOANI ECCE AGN (US DEI) (DVXIT) PORTA A MUNDI" (John see the Lamb of God, it leads through the gate out of the world). The other engravings are separated from each other by the crucifix. They read: “(Only) / (of the Lord) Jesus / Christ's power / (can be Mi) ttler of all / (our) sins / Anno 1.5.88./ the mercy of Georg / Schiemel Schultheiß / Lenhardt Glaser and / Petter Schraudt Baurn / Gottesmeister also Maurre / started building and Daniel [...] 8M / Johann Eydenbach pastor / and Johann Hirschberger (was) / Schüelmeister ".

The lower inscription is rectangular and has a narrow sandstone frame. It reads: “ANNO 1: 5: 88: this Orth zur [...] / Begrebnus alhier zu Aichfeldt was ordained for those so blissfully asleep in / Herr Christo / and at this time you were chief and builder / the mercy Georg Stösel Schultheiss Hans Cramer Baumeister / Hans Steffan Gottsmeister and Caspar Haan [...] ”. After a paragraph follows a psalm-like phrase : “Who in the Lord Christ (has gone) / He has (received anew) life / Bite from (the grave) stand up / Jesus Christ will walk with us / With Christ there was eternal life / That Christ had given by grace ”.
