Locations

The Friedrich-Alfred-Krupp monument was unveiled on November 17, 1907 on Limbecker Platz in Essen's city center , in order to symbolize the close ties between the two with the spatial proximity between the Krupp factories in what is now the Westviertel and the actual city of Essen. In 1937 it had to give way in its entirety due to a new traffic layout, so that it was set up near the Erlöserkirche outside the city center at that time. The bronze statue was preserved during the Second World War , but the architecture of the monument was destroyed. The original statue is now in the park of Villa Hügel .

Design of the monument

Funded by a fundraising committee, the committee commissioned high-ranking artists to submit their designs. It should be a monumental work of art, which does justice to the significance of the deceased in later times as well as in our time , so the demand of the committee. The third design by the Berlin sculptor Hugo Lederer received the approval of the monument committee on December 3, 1905. On a semicircular floor plan, a wall made of shell limestone formed the background for the bronze statue, which Friedrich Alfred Krupp depicted larger than life. The system stood on a platform that could be reached via a few steps.

The statue was flanked on either side by two accompanying figures; on the left there were two workers and on the right a woman with an infant and a man.

Between the two left figures of the workers was the inscription:
Friedrich / Alfred Krupp / 1854–1902 / has been at the helm since / 1887 / / the works / the creation / his father / faithfully caring / and / continuing to build

Between the two figures on the right of the mother with child and the man was the inscription:
In / Gratitude / The / Relatives / His Works / The Father City / The Friends / 1907

Originally the cost was estimated at 120,000 marks, but in the end 152,000 marks were actually  billed. The difference was made up by further donations from employees.

revelation

In addition to members of the Krupp family and employees, a representative sent by Kaiser Wilhelm II , Adjutant General Friedrich von Scholl , was present at the ceremonial unveiling . The speech was given by the Krupp manager Ludwig Klüpfel , who was regarded by the workers as the head of the company's own welfare institutions. Mayor Wilhelm Holle accepted the memorial on behalf of the city .

Donation by Margarethe Krupp

In gratitude for the monument, Friedrich Alfred Krupp's widow Margarethe Krupp gave the city of Essen 200 acres of land worth 500,000 marks from her property in Rüttenscheid .
