Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Achenbach (born June 20, 1878 in Seligenstadt ; † May 14, 1965 ) was a German shipbuilding engineer. He is one of the German pioneers of concrete shipbuilding .

Life

Friedrich Achenbach was born in Seligenstadt in 1878 as the son of the general practitioner Heinrich Achenbach and his wife Mathilde Achenbach. The young Achenbach graduated from the Realgymnasium in Frankfurt in March 1898 before starting a career as a naval construction officer in the shipbuilding department. Achenbach initially worked at the Imperial Shipyard in Kiel and then studied at the Technical University in Berlin until the main examination in 1904 . After intermittent work at several shipyards, Achenbach received his diploma as a shipbuilding engineer in 1906 and then worked first in Petersburg and later at AG Weser as a design engineer. During the First World War , Achenbach worked in Berlin at the Research Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Shipbuilding as an assistant to Karl Schaffran, where he dealt with ship accidents, among other things. Then Achenbach began to examine the possibilities of concrete shipbuilding on the Danube. He was in charge of the study committee for reinforced concrete shipbuilding and began to publish his first research results during the First World War. In 1920 he submitted his dissertation in Danzig to obtain the degree of doctoral engineer. Numerous other works and publications on concrete shipbuilding followed. In addition, Achenbach investigated arc welding in shipbuilding from the early 1920s. He was one of the early advocates of the joining process, which was still new at the time, and published various publications to promote it. Achenbach received patents for the foundations of ship engines in 1957 and died on May 14, 1965.
