Count Friedrich Anton von Wedel-Jarlsberg (between 1727 and 1738)

Life

His parents were the governor of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, Georg Ernst Graf von Wedel-Jarlsberg (1666-1717) from the noble family von Wedel and his wife Wilhelmine Juliane von Aldenburg (1665-1746) from the house of Aldenburg-Bentinck .

He studied at the University of Utrecht and on December 11, 1715 became a captain in the Prince Carl Regiment . Already on December 28, 1715 he was transferred to the Jutland Infantry Regiment and on December 24, 1717 to the Grenadier Corps. On March 13, 1719 he became a colonel and chief of the Oldenburg Infantry Regiment. On April 19, 1724 he received the Danebrogorden under the motto Deo Pieregi fide et proximo juste .

In 1728 there was a scandal . The then captain Praetorius accused his colonel of having made money into his own pocket when it came to the procurement. There was a court martial against Wedel. The court upheld all allegations and Wedel was convicted. The king was his relative, but received his resignation on August 10, 1728.

But on October 23, 1730 he was again chief of the grenadier regiment and on November 29, 1731 brigadier . With his regiment he was sent to Italy in 1732 to cross over to Corsica . By the time the troops got there, however, a peace had already been made. Therefore, he joined the General Saint Croiz on a campaign under José Carrillo de Albornoz, Duke of Montemar against Algiers . In front of Oran he was wounded by a poisoned arrow. His adventures in Africa caused a stir in Denmark. On June 22, 1733 he was by the King Christian VI. appointed Danish major general in absentia. When he returned the following year he also received a valuable sword from the king with the inscription: Mancus ubivis Gentium Ceuta Oranunque Quae SIVIT gloriam Virtutis Proemium Rosenburgi. Idus Aprilis MDC-CXXXVI (available endnu på Jarlsberg). Ides Aprilis MDC CXXXVI . Today it is located in Jarlsberg Castle. From 1731 he was co-owner of lead and silver mines at Jarls and from 1736 sole owner. However, he probably died as early as 1738 from the long-term effects of his wounding off Oran.

Jarlsberg

His father Georg Ernst von Wedel-Jarlsberg died on January 30, 1717, his older brother Christian Gustav von Wedel-Jarlsberg died on December 20, 1712 in the battle of Gadebusch . So on December 21, 1717 he became the heir of his grandfather Gustav Wilhelm von Wedel-Jarlsberg (1641-1717) and thus the second owner of the County of Jarlsberg .
