Friedrich Wilhelm Baron von Wedel-Jarlsberg ( Danish Frederik Vilhelm baron Wedel Jarlsberg ; born March 7, 1724 in Rendsburg , † February 22, 1790 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish governor and writer .

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm von Wedel-Jarlsberg was, after the later General Friedrich Christian von Wedel-Jarlsberg , the second son of Major General Friedrich Anton von Wedel-Jarlsberg (1694–1738) from the Wedel family and Countess Louise von Raben .

After his father's death, his guardian sent him to school in Halle, after which he studied in Göttingen . In 1741 he entered the Danish military service, which he left in 1753 as captain and company chief . Between 1753 and 1755 and again between 1759 and 1768 he was a member of the Danish Supreme Court. Between 1755 and 1759 he acted as a deputy for finances and between 1758 and 1763 he was co-curator of the Vemmetofte monastery in Zealand . In 1758 he became chamberlain , in 1767 a privy councilor and in 1768 bailiff of the two Schleswig offices of Aabenraa and Lügumkloster . Between the beginning of 1772 and the end of 1773 he was the last Danish Oberlanddrost (governor) of the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst before the Duchy of Oldenburg was founded in 1774.

He later lived on the Ravnstrup estate on Zealand, acquired in 1779. He dealt with agricultural reforms and advocated land consolidation and new forms of cultivation. He fought against the abolition of plaice binding in Denmark in 1788 and conducted historical studies. In 1763 he received the Dannebrog Order under the personal motto "Fiducia in Deum neminem unquam fefellit" and in 1783 the Elephant Order . From 1778 he was an honorary member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences .

Wedel had been married to Charlotte Amalie von Bülow (1719–1780) since 1748 , a daughter of the Danish major Friedrich von Bülow and Anna Salome Westring. His wife had previously been the maid of honor to the Danish Princess Charlotte Amalia. Wedel had five children, including their daughter Juliana , who was married to the Russian diplomat Johann von Mestmacher .
