Jürgen Ernst von Wedel

Jürgen Ernst von Wedel ("Wagehals") (* 1597 in Spiegel bei Reetz ; † March 16, 1661 in Kolberg ) was a Swedish general and envoy .

Jürgen Ernst von Wedel was a son of Colonel Ernst von Wedel zu Spiegel, Reetz and Nörenberg in Neumark and Ilse von Wedel adH Uchtenhagen. He attended the Joachimsthal High School and the Philipps University in Marburg . He reportedly spoke seven languages, including Greek and Hebrew .

In 1626 he became a Danish cavalryman , in 1627 a French lieutenant colonel and in 1630 a Swedish colonel . In 1631 he was a colonel in the service of the Electorate of Saxony. In 1636 he was a Swedish major general. He acted as the Swedish envoy to Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg and was Brandenburg Chamberlain . In 1644 he and his two brothers and two nephews were enfeoffed by Elector Friedrich Wilhelm with the Neumark estates of Spiegel, Reetz, Nörenberg, Neuenwerder and Trebeln. Since 1632 he was married to Anna von Ahlefeldt-Holstein, a daughter of the Danish district administrator Georg von Ahlefeldt and Margarethe Blome. He had five children, including General Friedrich Wilhelm von Wedel , the founder of the Danish Wedell-Wedellsborg line, and Field Marshal Gustav Wilhelm von Wedel , the founder of the Norwegian-East Frisian Wedel-Jarlsberg line.
