Johann von Mestmacher
John of Mestmacher (born August 17 . Jul / 28. August 1733 greg. In Reval ; † December 10 jul. / 22. December 1805 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Baltic German diplomat in the service of the Russian Empire.
Life
Mestmacher was the son of the builder of the same name of the Russian Admiralty. After graduating, he joined the Russian Foreign Service in Saint Petersburg. He was the legation secretary in Stockholm and from 1770 in Copenhagen , where he was active as a Russian chargé d'affaires from 1770 to 1772. In 1772 he was promoted to legation councilor.
After the conclusion of the treaty of Tsarskoye Selo, Mestmacher was the authorized minister of the Russian envoy to the Lübeck monastery in Eutin . From 1784 to 1789 he represented Russia as Minister-Resident at the court of Duke Peter von Biron in Mitau and was then envoy to the royal Saxon court in Dresden from 1789 to 1799 , where he did not take office until 1790. Mestmacher was appointed privy councilor in 1797 and retired from the diplomatic service in December 1798.
Mestmacher married Wilhelmine Juliane von Wedel - Jarlsberg (1752–1789) in Copenhagen in 1774 . In 1777 he was ennobled to a Polish baron with a nobility diploma on April 21, 1782; In 1789 he received the Courland indigenous community . Also during his time in Eutin, in 1777, he received the episcopal distinctive preamble, resigned by Peter Friedrich Ludwig because of his election as coadjutor , and thus became canon of the Lübeck cathedral chapter .
His son Friedrich Karl Johann Baron Mestmacher (1774-1817) also went to the Russian diplomatic service; another son, Peter Friedrich Ludwig Baron Mestmacher (1779–1815), started his career as an officer and became a captain .
