Friedrich August Neuman (born March 19, 1805 in Eupen ; † June 28, 1881 in Aachen ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the FA Neuman company .

Life

Friedrich August Neuman was born as the son of the cloth manufacturer Walter Kornelius Neuman and his wife Katharina Neuman. Driessen born in Eupen . He had at least two older brothers, Johann Leonard Neuman (* 1796; † 1848 Aachen) and Karl Neuman (* May 2, 1794; † December 9, 1869 in Jekaterinoslaw ). In 1821 the family moved to Neuman Aachen where Johann Leonard under the company Neuman & Bilstein a coppersmith workshop operation. Friedrich August Neuman learned the coppersmith trade there. In 1829 his brother and his brother-in-law Theodor Esser accepted him as a partner and works manager in the newly founded company Neuman & Esser . In 1841 this company built a. a. in cooperation with the British Imperial-Continental-Gas-Association the first gas tanks in Germany in Cologne. In 1845 it was regarded as one of the most important copper brawls in the Rhine Province .

After Johann Leonard Neuman's death in August 1848, Friedrich August went into business for himself on January 1, 1849 and set up a coppersmith's workshop in Kleinmarschierstraße 1222. There he first manufactured fire pumps , gas containers and boiler tubes for steam engines and locomotives . He soon acquired a 50  hp steam engine , which exploded in 1852, injuring six people. The city of Aachen then asked Neuman to outsource operations from the old town.

The most successful business was with gas boilers, which were increasingly needed by the cities to store the emerging city gas, especially for street lighting. In 1863 his company had already installed 78 gas boilers in the shape of bell gas containers .

On July 1, 1867, Neuman handed over management to his son Friedrich Joseph Hubert Neuman , who actively developed the company further. In 1868 a plant for the production of luminous gas from petroleum residues was put into operation . In 1871, part of the business, including a new steam boiler system, was relocated to Turmstrasse, and from 1883 gas and liquid containers were riveted together there.

Neuman died in Aachen in 1881 at the age of 76 and found his final resting place in Aachen's Ostfriedhof . His great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren are the tenors Christoph and Julian Prégardien .
