The family company Neuman & Esser, with its founding headquarters in Aachen (NEA for Neuman & Esser Aachen for short) is a manufacturer of reciprocating compressors , diaphragm compressors and grinding systems . The company produces primarily for the oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical , food and renewable energies market segments .

history

The roots of the Neuman & Esser company go back to the age of the industrial revolution .

Johann Leonard Neuman, born in Eupen in 1796 as the son of the cloth manufacturer Walter Kornelius Neuman, moved to Aachen in 1821 and initially founded a coppersmith's workshop under the Neuman & Bilstein company . When his brother-in-law Theodor Esser (* 1802 in Lechenich ) and his younger brother Friedrich August Neuman (1805–1881) joined the company , they turned to mechanical engineering , and from 1829 on they traded as JL Neuman & Cie. Machine factory and from 1830 as Neuman & Esser Aachen ( NEA ). In 1841 this company built Germany's first gas tanks in Cologne, among others in cooperation with the British Imperial Continental Gas Association . In 1845 it was considered to be one of the most important copper brawls in the Rhine Province .

After Johann Leonard Neuman's death in August 1848, Friedrich August left the company and founded his own coppersmith's workshop on January 1, 1849 at Kleinmarschierstrasse 1222, which later operated as Neuman FA GmbH & Co. KG . At first he manufactured incendiary syringes , gas containers and boiler tubes for steam engines and locomotives .

The main business was continued by Theodor Esser under the old name Neuman & Esser. Produced hydraulic presses , rolling decadent factors , Oszillant steam engines and shearing machines . In addition, repairing damaged machines was also part of the business back then. In 1888 Neuman & Esser moved into a new and larger assembly hall in Clasenstrasse, near Aachen's Westbahnhof .

Machine hall at the Westbahnhof

After Theodor Esser's death, Oscar Peters took over the machine factory as the sole owner in 1891. Since then Neuman & Esser has been owned by the Peters family.

Around 1900 NEA expanded the range to include piston steam engines and piston compressors, vacuum and liquid pumps and drying systems. In 1930/1931 the crushing plants followed . Neuman & Esser took over the licenses for the construction of pendulum mills based on Raymond's patent from the insolvent Aachen company Mehler . At the same time, NEA developed the first oil-free dry-running compressors. The oil-free compressors were used in breweries and the growing food industry . But they were also increasingly used in the chemical industry .

As the growing company needed more and more space, Neuman & Esser moved to a new factory site in Übach-Palenberg , 20 km from Aachen, in 1972 . At that time the mechanical engineering company had 250 employees. In 2018 there are more than 1000 employees worldwide. With the change of the company headquarters, the course was set for the development from a single company to a group of companies with locations in ten countries.

The establishment of Neuman & Esser Customer Service GmbH and its later renaming to NEAC Compressor Service GmbH & Co. KG in the 1980s heralded decentralization. The takeover of Maschinenfabrik Wurzen GmbH in Saxony in 1991 and of the supplier Stasskol piston rod seals in 2001 led to the expansion of the core business for compressors.

The company concentrated more and more on reciprocating compressors and grinding systems. Niche products such as container construction were removed from the production program.

In 2008 the fourth generation of the Peters family, Alexander and Stefanie, took over the management. Neuman & Esser has been positioning itself as a green machine builder since 2010 and is focusing on conserving resources and energy efficiency with new products .

In 2015 the Neuman & Esser Group acquired the family company Andreas Hofer High Pressure Technology GmbH . The companies have been working together successfully as part of a sales cooperation since 1995. Both family businesses combine technology leadership in their respective markets and the manufacture of customer-specific systems in niche markets. For Neuman & Esser the acquisition of Andreas Hofer high pressure technology GmbH , the products and the know-how of diaphragm compressors, high pressure piston compressors and fittings meant a supplement or expansion of their own product portfolio with further top technology "made in Germany".

Business areas

The piston compressors as well as the mills increasingly developed from individual machines to compressors or grinding systems. Although the Neuman & Esser Group produces exclusively at four locations in Germany and one location in the USA , the assembly and maintenance of the entire systems are carried out by 20 subsidiaries for sales and systems engineering as well as service at strategic points worldwide. The 25 operating companies have three holdings in Germany, the USA and China .

In addition to the production of compressors and grinding systems, Neuman & Esser relies on services. In 1988, NEA spun off customer service, which was founded in 1983, as NEAC Compressor Service as an independent company. For the first ten years after 1988, NEAC was a joint venture with Atlas Copco . The global sales network made available by the large partner enabled direct entry into international business. The clear separation between after-market and new machine business not only resulted in greater transparency, but also a clear focus of the business areas.

Compressors

The piston compressors from NEA compress air and technical gases . Oil-free and lubricated piston compressors with a suction volume of up to 100,000 Nm³ / h, 30,000 kW drive power and 1,000 bar final pressure are produced at the headquarters in Übach-Palenberg and Wurzen , with the larger sizes being manufactured in Übach-Palenberg and the smaller sizes in Wurzen. The core competence in the production of compressors was also expanded through the takeover of Stasskol, a manufacturer of piston rings and sealing systems. With the acquisition of Andreas Hofer High Pressure Technology GmbH, Neuman & Esser expanded its product portfolio to include diaphragm and piston compressors as well as valves in the high pressure area. This means that the entire product range from low pressure to 5,000 bar can be offered from a single source of the highest quality. This includes all activities that relate to the areas of design and manufacture of diaphragm and piston machines and valves as well as OEM spare parts, service and maintenance, upgrading and modernization of existing "Hofer" systems.

Grinding plants

Neuman & Esser has been building grinding plants since 1930 ; the company started with pendulum mills. This particularly robust type of mill dominated the market for a long time. Although it has been improved in some ways, for example the drive , they have basically changed little to this day. In 1994 the company launched its own impact classifier mill, for which NEA received the patent in 1998.

The areas of application of NEA mills are in the ceramic and chemical industry , in pigment production and in processing technology . In the last few years the areas of powder coating production and confectionery and food industry followed .

After market

The NEAC Compressor Service is the service organization for all reciprocating compressor products of Neuman & Esser Group . In addition, NEA owns the original order documents and original drawings of the compressor brands from Andreas Hofer, Linde , Esslinger / GHH , Demag , MaFa Wurzen, Chicago Pneumatic, Halberg , KSB (Erhardt & Sehmer) and PPC (PENN Process Compressors). Furthermore, Neuman & Esser acquired the entire after-sales service division of the Borsig-Berlin piston compressors from MAN Turbo , which were built until the end of 1995. NEAC Compressor Service and Peter Brotherhood (PB) have entered into a partnership since 2018 in order to offer the best possible service for the installed API 618 piston compressors from PB.

Neuman & Esser Foundation

For the 175th anniversary of the company, the Peters family decided to set up their own foundation in 2005: the Neuman & Esser Foundation of the Peters family . The purpose of the foundation is to promote science and research , culture and monument protection as well as local history, especially in the industrial region of Aachen. The purpose of the funding is realized through the care and maintenance of structural and technical facilities, scientific grants and grants to museums and public collections .

The funded objects include the Lochner Gate and the Lochner Tomb.
