Halbergerhütte

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Halbergerhütte was a large, traditional ironworks company in the heyday of heavy industry . At the two locations in Saarbrücken and Ludwigshafen am Rhein , the company manufactured products made of ductile cast iron for pipeline construction and for the automotive industry.

In 1756 the Halberger Werck smelting and hammer works was built under Prince Wilhelm Heinrich von Nassau-Saarbrücken . The location at the southern foot of the Halberg , near the village of Brebach , then around 5 km outside the city, is now part of the city of Saarbrücken. Two location factors, which also benefited the other ironworks in Saarland, favored further development in the 19th century:

  • The mining of hard coal in the Saar-Nahe basin .
  • The iron ore deposits in Lorraine . With around 30% iron content, this Minette ore is not particularly rich and difficult to smelt due to the high phosphorus content, but it contains plenty of lime , which is needed as an additive in the blast furnace anyway.

In the late 1860s, the plant specialized in piping and related products such as joints and covers. 1868–1869 blast furnaces and the first cupola furnace are built . From 1895 the pipes are poured in vertical, rotating casting molds made of baked sand, using the so-called carousel technique.

In 1919, the Halbergerhütte merged with the French Pont-à-Mousson group of companies to form an interest group.

1929–1931 production is switched to centrifugal casting with a horizontal axis of rotation.

In 1941, Halbergerhütte bought a machine factory in Ludwigshafen am Rhein for the production of pumps and steam engines with an attached foundry from the Sulzer brothers, and incorporated them into the corporate structure as Halberg Maschinenbau und Gießerei AG . In 1948 it is converted into a GmbH .

In 1958, a technique was introduced to make the normally brittle cast iron ductile, i.e. cold malleable: Magnesium was added to the melt in an induction furnace . The carbon enclosed in iron normally runs in the form of lamellae. The iron breaks easily along these weak points. The addition of magnesium causes the carbon to agglomerate in tiny spheres instead ( spheroidal graphite cast iron ).

In 1970 the Pont-à-Mousson company merged with the Saint-Gobain group and brought its majority stake in Halbergerhütte into the merger. 1971 Halberg Maschinenbau GmbH , based in Ludwigshafen, is taken over by Sterling Fluid Systems . In 1972, Saint-Gobain bought the remaining shares in Halbergerhütte. In 1977 the Halbergerhütte had around 4,300 employees.

Today's companies

Gusswerke Saarbrücken

In 1988 the automobile casting production with 2500 employees at that time was spun off into an independent subsidiary, Halberg-Guss GmbH . This subsidiary was sold by Saint-Gobain to the French Valois group in 1992 .

On September 1, 2009, the Halberg-Guss Group filed for bankruptcy.

In April 2011, the Dutch company HTP announced that it would take over the insolvent Halberg-Guss. This involved financial concessions by the employees. After several changes of ownership, the company now operates as Gusswerke Saarbrücken .

Saint-Gobain PAM Germany GmbH

After Halberg-Guss was outsourced, the production of pipes and fittings remained in Saint-Gobain Gussrohr , which in 1999 also took over the pipeline activities of the Thyssen group, the Schalker Verein in Gelsenkirchen . The part of the company that remained with Saint-Gobain has been operating as Saint-Gobain PAM Deutschland GmbH since 2009 and produced ductile iron pipes in Brebach-Fechingen until October 2019 .
