Friedrich Brandt

Friedrich Brandt (born July 1, 1823 in Schleswig , † June 3, 1891 in Flensburg ; full name Christian Friedrich Brandt ) was a German professional photographer and is counted among the pioneers of photo technology .

Life

Brandt had completed an apprenticeship as a bookbinder in 1844 ; he probably came into contact with photography during the course of his training. In 1851 he opened a photo studio in Schleswig, but moved his business to Flensburg the following year. Brandt was one of the earliest photographers in Schleswig-Holstein .

Brandt mainly photographed people, but was also active in the field of architectural photography and took exterior shots of urban views. Historically particularly significant are the pictures that he took as one of only four photographers of the battlefields and scenes of the German-Danish War , sometimes only a short time after the fighting. After the pictures from the Crimean War , these pictures are among the earliest war photographs in Europe .

Awards

On the occasion of an exhibition organized by the Photographisches Verein zu Berlin in May 1865, Brandt received a medal for taking photographs of landscapes.
