Friedrich Bundtzen

Friedrich Bundtzen (born July 17, 1910 in Brühl ; † January 31, 1989 in Weißwasser / Oberlausitz ) was a German designer and glass designer. As a student of Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Friedrich Bundtzen was one of the most influential glass designers in the GDR, along with Brigitte Bundtzen, Margarete Jahny , Ilse Decho and Horst Michel .

Life

Friedrich Bundtzen was born on July 17, 1910 as the son of a master glassworker in Brühl in the Rhineland. After attending elementary school in Kamenz , Bundtzen began an apprenticeship as a draftsman and glass painter at Max Kray & Co. in Kamenz. After completing vocational school and an apprenticeship, he began a three-year journey through various glassworks in 1925 . In 1932 he took on his first permanent position as a glass designer in the Kamenz plant of the United Lusatian Glass Works . From 1938 he worked in the design and advertising department under the direction of Wilhelm Wagenfeld on the development of the diamond glass range.

His professional development was interrupted at the beginning of the Second World War when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . After returning from captivity in 1946, he returned to the arts and crafts. In the fall of 1948 Wilhelm Wagenfeld appointed him to Berlin as an assistant . Here he began studying at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin-Wilmersdorf , which he - like the assistant position - had to give up after Wagenfeld moved to Stuttgart at the end of 1949.

From 1949 he worked as artistic director of the Association of Publicly Owned Enterprises Ostglas and tried to tie in with Wagenfeld's pre-war designs in terms of quality and art.

“The Wagenfeld glasses with the diamond symbol are still produced and sold in the state-owned company 'Oberlausitzer Glaswerke'. That which was beautiful and good had to be preserved because the quality in this work deteriorated seriously, both in terms of the shapes and the decorative design of the glasses. "

- Friedrich Bundtzen : form + Zweck , 1959, p. 31.

On 1 October 1950, he founded the workshop for glass design in white water, for which he engravers , grinders and glass painter, among others, Konrad day undertook Franz Haiplick, Fritz Heinzel, Fritz Wondrejz or Karl Bayer as a lecturer. After just one year, almost 100 new shapes were awarded the quality mark for handicrafts.

Artistically influenced by Wagenfeld, Bundtzen designed simple, mostly conical smoked glass vases, drinking glass and glass tableware series as well as pressed glasses with restrained decor, which were produced in series in the Weißwasser Bärenhütte glass factory, Ankerglas Bernsdorf and in VEB Lausitzer Glaswerke Weißwasser as well as models or small batches were produced in the glass design workshop. In 1954, together with the glass cutter Alfred Görner, he succeeded in creating the first (verifiable) copy of a Roman slide glass .

Friedrich Bundtzen was in close correspondence with Wilhelm Wagenfeld until 1971, during which the two designers intensively exchanged views on the development of the shape and decor as well as the quality of the glasses.

In addition to his design work, Friedrich Bundtzen worked as a lecturer and lecturer at the engineering school for glass technology in Niesky, at the Technical University of Dresden and from 1961 to 1988 at the University of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee , which also awarded him the diploma in design in 1967 .

Friedrich Bundtzen's glass designs were shown regularly at art exhibitions in the GDR and, since 1952, at the Leipzig Trade Fair and published in magazines such as Form + Zweck , Schöne Glas , Kultur im Heim and Sybille .

Friedrich Bundtzen was a member of the expert committee of the German Office for Material and Goods Testing (DAMW) from 1951 to 1963 , since 1965 of the Council for Design, the Council for Industrial Forms of the GDR, the central board of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , head of the working group for industrial glass and since 1968 artistic director of the VVB household glass and packaging glass . When he took on this task, he had to give up his development work in the design workshop.

Today his glasses are shown in various applied arts museums, including the Weißwasser Glass Museum , the Neue Sammlung in the Munich Pinakothek der Moderne , the Grassimuseum in Leipzig , the Dresden Museum of Applied Arts , the Schwerin State Museum and the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts .
