Margarete Jahny studied from 1948 to 1953 at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts . Initially, Erich Fraaß is her undergraduate teacher, and she completes the third semester in Josef Hegenbarth's specialist class . When he resigns from his teaching position, Hans Theo Richter and Lea Grundig take over from Hegenbarth. During the semester break, on the initiative of Rector Mart Stam, work in the university ceramics workshop offers them the opportunity to earn money. She is increasingly drawn to ceramics. So she then switches from graphics to studying ceramics. The design theory at the Dresden Art Academy is mainly shaped by Rudolf Kaiser and, for a short time, but also very lastingly, by Mart Stam, Hajo Rose and Marianne Brandt in the ceramic workshop. From 1955 to 1963 she was an artistic research assistant at the Institute for Applied Arts Berlin, Working Group Vessels. She then worked at the Central Institute for Design in Berlin until 1972, where she worked with Erich Müller. From 1972 to 1979 she was a research assistant in the office for industrial design , specializing in glass, ceramics and porcelain. She then worked at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art until 1983, initially as an employee and from 1983 on with a teaching position. Margarete Jahny was a member of the Association of Fine Artists of the GDR . She is considered the most important artist in the GDR.
