Friedrich Canthal

Friedrich Canthal (born April 9, 1848 in Hanau ; † November 9, 1922 ) was an entrepreneur and local politician in Hanau.

Life

Friedrich ("Fritz") Canthal was born in Hanauer Judengasse as the son of a brandy and liqueur manufacturer . In 1863, after his father's death, he took over the company and developed it into one of the leading companies in the branch in southwest Germany. From 1876 he was a member of the Hanau Chamber of Commerce , of which he was president between 1891 and 1918.

From 1884 he was also active in local politics in Hanau and from 1898 to 1908 head of the city ​​council . He was then a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Hesse-Nassau until 1916 .

Canthal played a key role in the expansion of Hanau into a military base when part of the railroad troops of the German Reich were stationed here. From 1896 to 1899 he was a member of the first supervisory board of Hanauer Kleinbahn AG and then again from 1902 to 1817. He also operated the expansion of Hanau Main Harbor . He was a member of the board of trustees of the Hanau Drawing Academy .

In 1904, Kaiser Wilhelm II awarded him the title of " Kommerzienrat " and in 1918 the title of "Secret Kommerzienrat". He was the first citizen from a Jewish family who was able to occupy such a prominent position in Hanau's urban society.

Friedrich Canthal was buried in the main cemetery in Hanau .

Honors

In 1916 Friedrich Canthal was given honorary citizenship of the city of Hanau. The Canthalstraße near the Main Hanauer harbor is named after him.
