Friedrich G. Barth

Friedrich Günther Barth (born April 18, 1940 in Munich ) is a German-Austrian zoologist ( arachnologist ) and neurobiologist .

Life

From 1959 Barth studied biology, human physiology and neurosciences at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and with a Fulbright scholarship at the University of California, Los Angeles . He was a member of the German National Academic Foundation. In 1967 he received his doctorate at Hansjochem Autrum at the University of Munich and in 1971 he completed his habilitation in Munich. From 1974 he was professor of zoology at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and. In 1987 he became professor of zoology at the University of Vienna and head of the animal physiology and neurobiology departments.

He investigates behavior in orb web spiders and predatory spiders controlled by mechanoreceptors and the structure and modeling of their mechanical receptors (touch sensors of the hair and their detection of air movements, force and strain sensors in the exoskeleton) as well as the communication of stingless bees via vibrations.

Memberships, honors, editing

In 2002 he received the Karl-Ritter-von-Frisch Medal of the German Zoological Society , in 2002 the Cardinal Innitzer Prize and in 2007 the City of Vienna Prize for Natural Sciences .

He is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1998), the Leopoldina (1999), the Academia Europaea and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1991). In 1994 he was the founder of the Austrian Neuroscience Association (ANA) and its president in 2006/07.

He is editor of the Journal of Comparative Physiology A (Neuroethology, Sensory, Neural and Behavioral Physiology).
