Friedrich Giese (music researcher)

Friedrich Martin Otto Giese (born April 7, 1882 in Forst , Niederlausitz ; † February 28, 1970 in Greifswald ) was a German music teacher , lecturer and music researcher in Stettin and Greifswald. His collection of sources on the music history of Pomerania is still partially untapped.

Life

His father Friedrich Giese was a teacher in Forst. After elementary school and high school, the young Friedrich Giese attended the teacher preparation course and the teachers' seminar in Pyritz. From 1903 to 1904 he was a one-year volunteer in Stettin. Then he worked as a teacher in Woltin, Pasewalk and Forst. From 1914 to 1919 Friedrich Giese was in the military.

In 1920 he passed an examination to become a singing teacher at the Academy for Church and School Music in Berlin and since 1921 has been a music teacher at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Stettin. 1925 received Giese qualification as teacher . Since that year he has been researching the music history of Pomerania intensively in archives. In 1931 he was dismissed from the grammar school due to political differences and from then on he was a music teacher at the middle and then the elementary school in Szczecin.

In 1943, after the evacuation, he went to Altentreptow , where he was a teacher from 1945. Friedrich Giese rejoined the SPD and became a member of the SED in 1946. In 1947 he got a teaching position for methodology of music lessons at the Pedagogical Institute of the University of Greifswald and was a subject teacher for music.

There is almost no information about his further life. Friedrich Giese died in Greifswald in 1970. His musicological estate is in the archive of St. Marienkirche in Stralsund .
