Schüler was initially active in the Alsatian economy, but moved to Vienna in 1855 when French citizens were hired by the State Railroad Company, which was newly founded in Austria . He initially worked there as general inspector of commercial operations. In 1861 he joined the Südbahngesellschaft as general inspector. Board member in 1865, he became director of the commercial department in 1869 and in 1871 took over the management of the traffic service as operations director, where he stood out as a tariff expert. From 1878 pupil was general director. He tried to reorganize and consolidate the company, which was in financial difficulties at the time. He is also the initiator of Austria's first electric railway, the Mödling – Hinterbrühl local railway operated by the Südbahngesellschaft .

Schüler's development policy of tourist resorts for the upper class - including Abbazia / Opatija , Toblach and Semmering - was trend- setting . In all of these places, the Southern Railway Company built, following the example of other, mainly British and American railway companies, upscale hotels near the train station, which, thanks to considerable advertising, had great economic success and led to the rise of these places. In addition, the tourism promoted by the railway hotels resulted in a considerable increase in traffic for the railway company - after all, all of the places mentioned were only sensibly accessible via the southern railway company. These were about:

He also supported the construction of the Mödling – Hinterbrühl local railway , as well as the Spielfeld-Radkersburg local railway and the Kaltenleutgender railway , for reasons of tourist traffic and for better utilization of the southern railway.

In 1884, Schüler took Austrian citizenship and became a lifelong member of the manor house .

Schüler died in 1894 where he lived in Mödling, where he was also buried in a mausoleum built by the architect Alexander Wielemans .

Appreciation

In Abbazia, in front of the Hotel Kvarner, the souvenir bust of schoolchildren made by the sculptor Johann Rathausky was set up and the bank promenade, now named after Emperor Franz Josef, was dedicated to schoolchildren. The bust is still preserved, but is now in Angiolina Park in Opatija. In Opatija there is also a public staircase named after a student.
