Life

After attending the teacher training college in Vechta from 1901 to 1906, he was a primary school teacher in Langwege , Delmenhorst , Vechta from 1907 to 1911 . The second teacher examination followed in 1910, and from 1911 to 1914 he studied at the University of Gießen as a non-high school graduate with an examination “in the general subjects of pedagogy and philosophy as well as mathematics and geography .” On the basis of his very good university final examination and an “excellent scientific achievement” rated Kenkel received his doctorate in 1919 . He was the first so-called " seminar academician " to achieve a doctorate in philosophy.

From 1914 to 1926, with interruptions caused by military service , he was a teacher at the teachers' college in Vechta. When it was dismantled, he worked as a teacher at the local advanced school and , after it was closed, at the "Deutsche Oberschule" in Vechta. From 1928 to 1933 he also had a teaching position at the "pedagogical course" for geography in Vechta, which was closed in 1933 by the National Socialists .

When, after the Second World War, the opportunity was created to found a Catholic educational academy in Vechta, he found himself ready to set it up and in the summer of 1945 made the first proposals to the Oldenburg state government for the reintroduction of the educational courses.

On March 19, 1946, the opening of the State Pedagogical Academy Vechta, the forerunner of the Vechta University , was under his direction. The city of Vechta has named a street near the current university in recognition of his services.
