Friedrich Lachmann

Friedrich Lachmann (full name Karl Friedrich Theodor Lachmann , born December 2, 1800 in Braunschweig , † December 14, 1828 in Göttingen ) was a German classical philologist . In his short creative period he made two detailed studies of the sources of the historian Livy .

Life

Friedrich Lachmann was a son of the pastor and teacher Karl Ludolf Friedrich Lachmann (1756–1823) from his third marriage to Anna Luise Sabine Tünzel (1776–?). His older half-brothers were the philologist Karl Lachmann (1793-1851), the founder of modern textual criticism , and the doctor Heinrich Lachmann (1797-1872); his younger brother was the doctor and naturalist Wilhelm Lachmann (1801–1861).

Friedrich Lachmann attended the Martino-Katharineum grammar school in Braunschweig and then studied classical philology at the University of Göttingen , where he was influenced by Georg Ludolf Dissen and Karl Otfried Müller . In the years 1820/21 and 1821/22 he solved the award tasks of the philosophical faculty with two studies on the sources of the historian Livius . He submitted the first award paper for the doctorate to Dr. phil. before (September 22, 1821), the second for habilitation (Easter 1822).

From 1821 Lachmann worked as an assistant at the university library . From 1822 he also taught Latin and Greek at the Göttingen grammar school and held lectures as a private lecturer. During this time he published his award papers (1822, 1828) as well as a congratulatory paper on the golden jubilee of Johann Friedrich Adolf Kirsten , the rector of the Göttingen grammar school. Lachmann died on December 14, 1828 at the age of 28.
