Life
The son of a private civil servant completed his career as an officer, became a cadet in 1849, first lieutenant in the 1st Viennese gendarmerie regiment in 1857 and captain in 1864. After he retired in 1866, he moved to Graz and devoted himself to his literary inclinations. His poems had already appeared in 1862 under the title Gemüt und Welt . The tragedy Olympias followed in 1863, the Jacobäa von Bayern play in 1869 , and the lyrical epic Bruno of Carinthia in 1875 . From 1870 to 1872 Marx was chairman of the Styrian writers' association. In 1877 he was reactivated and in 1889, after various assignments, he was appointed commander of the Styrian-Carinthian kk Landwehr Infantry Regiment "Klagenfurt" No. 4 . In 1890 he was promoted to colonel. He spent his permanent retirement from 1892 in Graz and Oberdrauburg . Marx was friends with Peter Rosegger , Robert Hamerling and in particular with his relative Alfred Meißner (1822–1885).
Marx is one of the representatives of the "Noric School".
