Friedrich Schwend

Friedrich Schwend , alias Dr. Fritz Wendig (born November 6, 1906 in Böckingen ; † 1980 in Lima , Peru ) was SS-Sturmbannführer in the 1940s and on behalf of and under the control of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) sales manager for Aktion Bernhard . This forged large quantities of English pound notes on behalf of the SS . The aim of the action was to destabilize the English economy and to procure foreign currency .

Life

On the recommendation of Wilhelm Höttl , he became head of sales for counterfeit currencies in 1943; the official name of the agency was "Sonderstab Generalkommando III. Germanic Panzer Corps ". Schwend received the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer, was subordinate to Ernst Kaltenbrunner and reported directly to Heinrich Himmler . Schwend was able to keep a third of the counterfeit currency to himself, but he had to entertain his negotiators with it. These included Alberto Crastan, Georg Gyssling and Jaac van Harten .

After the end of the war, Schwend surrendered to the US troops in Tyrol on May 12, 1945 . He revealed his hiding places in Austria and South Tyrol , the gold found alone was worth USD 200,000 . From 1945 to 1946 Schwend worked for the CIC , in 1946 he settled on one of the " rat lines " to Peru . In South America he worked with Klaus Barbie .
