Friedrich Theodor Kaufmann (* 9. April 1823 in Dresden , † 5. February 1872 ) was a Saxon watchmakers , instrument makers and inventors and acoustician .

Life

Friedrich Theodor Kaufmann was a member of the watchmaker, inventor, and instrument maker family Kaufmann. His father was Friedrich Kaufmann , one of his grandfathers was Johann Gottfried Kaufmann .

Together with his father, Kaufmann went on an art tour through Austria, Bavaria, Russia and Denmark from 1842 to 1844. On their return trip from Copenhagen they were shipwrecked, as a result of which they lost all of their instruments. In the period from 1844 to 1851, they rebuilt their lost instruments, but brought new ideas and experiences to their constructions. In the course of this work, Friedrich Theodor Kaufmann invented his " Orchestrion ".

In 1851 and 1852 Kaufmann made his last trip with his father; it took them to England, Ireland and Scotland.

In their hometown of Dresden, father and son built their so-called “acoustic cabinet”, which was already a destination for travelers and tourists in the 19th century.

In May 1858 Kaufmann was in correspondence with Leipzig-based August Theodor Whistling of the CF Peters company regarding an offer for the sheet music printing for the concert piece Adagio and Rondo (Concertino) for harmonichord and orchestra F composed by Carl Maria von Weber for Kaufmann's harmonichord -Dur (WeV N.12) .
