Johann Friedrich von Wächter (born May 28, 1767 in Stuttgart ; † June 15, 1840 ) was senior bailiff at the Heilbronn Oberamt and later director of the Stuttgart prison college.

family

Johann Friedrich von Wächter came from an old Württemberg civil servant family. He was a son of the Württemberg court and finance councilor Johann Eberhard von Wächter (1735–1807) and his wife Maria Regina Sigel (1733–1798). Johann Friedrich's older brother was Karl Eberhard von Wächter (1758–1829), who was briefly Minister of the Interior of Württemberg. One of his sons was the later Minister Karl von Waechter-Spittler (1798–1874).

life and work

Wächter studied law at the Hohen Karlsschule in Stuttgart from 1784 to 1788 and then worked as a lawyer . In 1795 he was appointed senior magistrate at the Gochsheim District Office , 1804 at the Waiblingen District Office and 1808 at the Heilbronn District Office . During his term of office the reorganization of the Württemberg upper offices fell around 1810 as well as the coalition wars of 1813/14, which resulted in frequent troop marches in his administrative district, since Heilbronn was a stage place . In 1812 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, with which the personal nobility was connected. In 1815 he asked for his transfer for health reasons and came to Stuttgart as a senior judicial officer, where he headed the penal college as director.
