Friedrich Wehde had established a not insignificant reputation as a glass painter in the 19th century, including as the creator of numerous church windows . After he had received a medal for his achievements at the trade exhibition in Hanover in 1878 , he ran a studio for both photography and glass painting, according to the reverse of one of his Cartes de Visite (CdV) in the then Osterstraße 83 in Hanover . In the early days of the German Empire , however , he did not open his company until December 1879 in Hanover. According to the magazine Musikalisches Wochenblatt , a “[...] portrait of the writer and sound poet Edmund v. Hagen “appeared; the artist's work could then "[...] be obtained from all book , music and art stores."

In 1883 Wehde moved to Stadthagen and was promoted to court photographer by the Schaumburg-Lippe family . From his studio at Bahnhofsweg 6 in Stadthagen, a chest portrait in cabinet format, handwritten in 1893 by the former Princess of Saxony-Altenburg and then Marie Anna Fürstin zu Schaumburg-Lippe, is dated .

In particular, however, Wehde, who in addition to the one in Stadthagen also had a studio in Bückeburg , left behind numerous, often hand- colored , photos of women in Bückeburg traditional costumes - similar to the photographer FW Kuhlmann who worked in Bückeburg and Bad Eilsen or the court photographer William Focke who also worked in Bückeburg .

After the First World War and at the beginning of the Weimar Republic , Wehde's son took over the company, now called Hofphotographer Friedrich Wehde Nachf., Inh. O. Wehde .
