Friedrich Wencke was a son of the shipbuilder Bernhard Wencke (1814-1881), who in 1851 had built a dry dock on Hamburg's Elbe island Steinwärder . He received training in shipbuilding abroad and then worked together with his brother Heinrich Wencke (1844–1919) in the management of his father's shipyard . In 1866, both brothers took over the shipyard operations with the dry dock from their father and in 1868 also began their own shipping activities. Friedrich Wencke became the sole owner of the shipyard and shipping company in 1900 after his brother had withdrawn from the business as a co-owner. The company now traded as B. Wencke Sons. Towards the end of 1901 Wenke decided against an extension of the lease for the shipyard, because the Hamburg state had made the construction of a modern floating dock a condition. The shipyard was taken over by the Reiherstieg shipyard and the dry dock was filled in. Wencke continued to run the company as a shipping company until his death. In his will he ordered the liquidation of the B. Wencke Sons company.

Wencke was a member of the Hamburg citizenship from 1871 to 1872 and 1876 to 1879 . He also worked in the deputation for trade and shipping. He was a founding member and member of the supervisory board of the German-Australian Steamship Company .

Wencke donated a roughly four-meter-high figure of Christ for the Ohlsdorf cemetery , which the Hamburg sculptor Xaver Arnold created from white marble and was unveiled on July 22, 1905. Friedrich Wencke was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery. His grave is adorned by a tomb, which was also created by Xaver Arnold.
