No. 4: B. Wencke Sons shipyard (1850–1900)

In 1850/51 Wencke moved to Hamburg and built a shipyard in Steinwerder . On October 11, 1851, the first brick dry dock was put into operation there. The construction was complex and very expensive at 100,000 M Ct ( Courantmark ). Since it was not airtight and water was constantly seeping in, it was popularly known as the “spring valley”.

Around 90 ships were built at the B. Wencke Söhne shipyard between 1851 and 1900. In the first phase there were wooden ships, mainly barges , full ships and schooners up to 1000 register tons, many of which were built for their own account. After the conversion to iron shipbuilding (second phase), tugboats , fish steamers , passenger steamers and steam barges were mainly built for third parties. The 750 GRT freight steamer Inlander for the German-Australian Steamship Company in Hamburg was the largest ship in this second phase.

The shipyard was taken over by the Reiherstieg shipyard in 1900 .

Wencke built a total of over 100 ships in Bremen and Hamburg.

After the death of the last owner Friedrich Wencke , the shipping company was dissolved.
