Friedrich Westphal (born September 26, 1835 in Duisburg , † December 12, 1915 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German businessman and entrepreneur .

Life

Westphal grew up as the son of the shipbuilding company Johann Josef Westphal in Duisburg. He attended grammar school here from 1847 and left it with a certificate for one-year volunteer service . He began a commercial apprenticeship in the tobacco factory Arnold Böninger . He stayed there until 1865 as a commercial clerk. He then moved to the J. W. Zanders paper mill in Bergisch Gladbach under the company's boss Carl Richard Zanders . Here he soon acquired a secure management position. On August 18, 1867, he married his cousin Christiane von Oven, with whom he had seven children.

Entrepreneur

With the death of Carl Richard Zanders on August 23, 1870, his widow Maria Zanders transferred important tasks in the management of the company to Westphal . From now on the company grew steadily. In 1876 the Dombach paper mill was acquired, where the Alte Dombach paper museum is located today . Together with the Gohrsmühle and the Schnabelsmühle , the company now had three locations that were further expanded. When Maria Zanders' two sons Richard Zanders and Hans Zanders joined the company management in 1886 , he worked them both for four years and then left the company in complete harmony. He remained closely associated with the Zanders family.

In 1891 he had the first post office built in Bergisch Gladbach and leased it to the Reichspost .

politics

Westphal was also involved in local politics in Bergisch Gladbach . So he was initially active as a city councilor. Soon afterwards he took over the office of alderman. In these offices he was able to play a key role in the further development of Bergisch Gladbach. In his many years of activity in the district committee, he campaigned for the reorganization of the district savings bank and as a commissioner for old-age and disability insurance .
